Pocahontas County Food Handler Certificate Training

Overview

The Pocahontas County Health Department regulates food establishments in accordance with West Virginia Legislative Rule 64CSR17, which adopts applicable provisions of the FDA Food Code.

Under this rule, local health departments are responsible for regulating restaurants, retail food stores, schools, hospitals, bars, childcare facilities, and other permanent establishments that prepare, serve, sell, or handle food.

The Health Department also regulates temporary food establishments operating at fairs, festivals, roadside stands, community events, and similar locations. Food establishments are inspected as required and may be inspected more frequently when necessary to protect public health.

Food Handler Permits

In addition to obtaining the required health permit to operate, food establishments must ensure that all employees who prepare, serve, sell, or handle food obtain a valid food worker card.

In Pocahontas County, food workers are required by the Pocahontas County Food Code to obtain a food worker card within the first 30 days of employment.

Food handler training may be completed through the Pocahontas County Health Department or online through the TAP Series Pocahontas County Food Handler Course.
