Florida Mandatory Reporter Training

The purpose of this online course is to help all Florida Mandated Reporters understand their critical role in protecting children by recognizing and reporting child abuse.

Everyone who suspects child abuse or neglect should call the Florida State Department of Children and Families Abuse Hotline to make a report, but Mandated Reporters are required by law to do so, with penalties for failure to do so ranging from fines and/or potential jail time. 

In the state of Florida, professionals are required by law to report Florida Statute Ann. Stat. § 39.201 which states that any person, agency, organization, or entity that knows or in good faith suspects child abuse or neglect shall make a report. For purposes of this section, ‘person’ shall include, but not be limited to: Physicians, osteopaths, medical examiners, chiropractors, nurses, or hospital personnel, other health or mental health professionals, practitioners who rely solely on spiritual means for healing, teachers or other school officials or personnel, social workers, daycare center workers, or other professional child care, foster care, residential, or institutional workers and all Florida law enforcement officers or judges. 

Florida Statute Ann. Stat. § 39.201 outlines that he names of reporters shall be entered into the record of the report but shall be held confidential. The name of the reporter may not be released to any person other than employees of the Department of Children and Family Services responsible for child protective services, the central abuse hotline, law enforcement, the child protection team, or appropriate State attorney, without the written consent of the reporter.
