How to Stay Safe from Food Poisoning: Tips for Eating Healthy Without Getting Sick

Let's talk about stuff that can make you sick from the food you eat and what can be done about it.

  • Things that can make you sick: There are certain things about how food is made and handled that can lead to people getting sick. These are called risk factors. Some common ones are:
  1. Getting food from places that aren't safe.
  2. Not keeping food at the right temperature.
  3. Not cooking food properly.
  4. Using equipment that's not clean.
  5. Not being clean yourself when handling food.
  • Why it's important: These things are important to pay attention to because they can cause outbreaks of illnesses. That's why when health inspectors check restaurants and food places, they look out for these things.
  • What's being done about it: Back in 1993, some important rules were made to help keep people safe from getting sick from food. These rules were added to what the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) already had in place. Here are five simple rules:
  1. Making sure people who handle food know how to do it safely.
  2. Making sure employees who are sick don't spread their germs to the food.
  3. Don't touch food with dirty hands.
  4. Follow time and temperature rules to stop germs from growing.
  5. Give customers a heads-up about food that could be risky to eat by disclosure or
    Consumer Advisory.

By following these rules, we can help keep ourselves and others safe from getting sick from the food we eat.
