Indiana Mandatory Reporter Training

The purpose of this online course is to help all Indiana Mandated Reporters understand their critical role in protecting children by recognizing and reporting child abuse.

Everyone who suspects child abuse or neglect should call the Indiana Department of Child Services Hotline to make a report, but Mandated Reporters are required by law to do so, with penalties for failure to do so ranging from fines to potential jail time.

In the state of Indiana, Mandatory Reporting laws are very strict and all professionals are required by law to report Indiana Statute Stat. Code § 31-33-5-1 which states that any person, agency, organization, or entity that knows or in good faith suspects child abuse or neglect shall make a report. For purposes of this section, ‘person’ shall include, but not be limited to: any professional person who has reason to believe that a child is a victim of abuse or neglect, as well as any other persons who has reason to believe that a child is a victim of abuse or neglect.

Indiana Statute Stat. § 31-33-5-1 outlines in its disclosure that the report shall be made available to the person about whom a report has been made, with protection for the identity of the following: any person reporting known or suspected child abuse or neglect and any other person if the person or agency making the information available finds that disclosure of the information would be likely to endanger the life or safety of the person.

The report also may be made available to each parent, guardian, custodian, or other person responsible for the welfare of a child named in a report and an attorney of any of these individuals, with protection for the identity of reporters and other appropriate individuals.
