North Carolina Mandatory Reporter Training

The purpose of this online course is to help all North Carolina Mandated Reporters understand their critical role in protecting children by recognizing and reporting child abuse.

Everyone who suspects child abuse or neglect should call the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Hotline to make a report, but Mandated Reporters are required by law to do so, with penalties for failure to do so ranging from fines and/or potential jail time.

In the state of North Carolina, Mandatory Reporting laws are very strict and all professionals are required by law to report North Carolina Statute Stat. § 7B-301, which states that any person, agency, organization, or entity that knows or in good faith suspects child abuse or neglect shall make a report. Any person or institution that has cause to suspect abuse or neglect shall report. No professional groups or persons are specified; all persons are required to report

North Carolina Statute Stat. § 7B-301, states that The North Carolina Department of Social Services shall hold the identity of the reporter in strictest confidence, except that the department shall disclose confidential information regarding the identity of the reporter to any Federal, State, or local government entity or its agent with a court order. The department may only disclose confidential information regarding the identity of the reporter to a Federal, State, or local government entity or its agent without a court order when the entity demonstrates a need for the reporter’s name to carry out the entity’s mandated responsibilities.
