School Shootings on the Rise

The 13th school shooting in the United States this year occurred on Monday morning at a small private Christian school in Nashville, where a 28-year-old woman shot and killed three children and three adults before being fatally shot by responding officers.

Education Week's metrics show that this shooting resulted in more deaths than any other school shooting this year. 

Just six days prior to this recent tragedy, a shooting took place at East High School in Denver where a 17-year-old suspect, who was being searched upon entry, managed to obtain a weapon and injured two school administrators before being found by a SWAT team. 

The day before the Nashville shooting, at Lamar High School in Arlington, a 16-year-old boy was fatally shot and a girl was shot in the jaw. The alleged perpetrator, a student at the same school, is currently facing a charge of capital murder. 

In February, there was only one reported school shooting at the Walter P. Carter Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore, where a 15-year-old was critically injured after being shot, according to authorities.

In January 6th, there were three separate school shootings in the U.S. A student was injured in a shooting after a basketball game at Oak Park High School in Michigan, with four students from nearby schools arrested in connection with the incident. A teen was shot outside a basketball game at Wekiva High School in Florida, and authorities believe the victim was an innocent bystander. The third shooting, which made headlines worldwide, occurred at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, where a 6-year-old student brought a gun to school and shot his teacher, Abby Zwerner. The teacher was critically injured but has since been released from the hospital.

In total, according to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 129 mass shootings in the United States in 2023.
