We sometimes forget the long and storied saga of smartphone technology, which extends back to about 2006, or roughly the last year someone cared about an Avril Lavigne song. That year, the first modern smartphones appeared, and Apple introduced their iPhone a year later, which vastly widened the reach of smartphones and left the creators of those 2006 devices angrily insisting at cocktail parties that they did it first.

Soon, smartphones were ubiquitous, and people realized that they could do many wonderful things, such as accessing the internet and letting it raise their children for them -- I mean finding and distributing valuable information; however, doing so required faster wireless data access. Manufacturers and carriers responded to the demand for improved data services with 3G (third generation) devices and networks.
