5G will provide peak network speeds of up to 2Gbps. With 5G, you could theoretically download a 4K ultra-high-definition movie in just a few minutes. And I say ‘theoretically’ because we all know you’re actually going to download a full season of Love is Blind. Aside from easing the consumption of existing content, 5G networks could very well catalyze an explosion of creativity in all multimedia spaces. The complexity and intrigue of something like a virtual reality, live, multiplayer game is deeply dependent on network speed, so expanding those limits will allow creators to add the kinds of layers that keep gamers engaged.

5G will also operate at a massive scale in ways that previous generations never could. Billions of IoT (Internet of Things) devices will now be connected to a lightning fast network, giving almost every object you can imagine smart capabilities. Maybe we could get a Scrabble board that instantly searches every word and won’t let you put down a piece if it’s… wait, that’s the Words With Friends app.

5G will also improve our ability to perform high-stakes, complex tasks like remote surgery and operation of autonomous vehicles. We’re talking about a person in a rural community getting a desperately needed operation from a surgeon in a city thousands of miles away using a portable microscopic surgery machine. Without latency issues, autonomous trucks will travel much more closely together, which saves massive amounts of fuel, and will make it even more fun to watch jerks on motorcycles try to cut between eighteen-wheelers.
