VibroSense uses lasers to capture vibrations in walls, as well as a deep learning network that models the vibrometer's data to create signatures for each appliance. Recognizing home activities helps computers better understand human behavior, with the hope of developing better human-machine interfaces.

 

VibroSense is the first system that monitors devices in different floors/rooms by using one device. The network is trained to distinguish different activities by learning path signatures as well as their distinct noises. The device showed 96% accuracy in identifying 17 activities across five houses including dripping faucets, an exhaust fan, an electric kettle, a refrigerator and a range hood. 

The device is primarily useful in single-family houses because in buildings it picks up activities in neighboring apartments, presenting a potential privacy risk. It could also prevent water and electrical waste, as well as electrical failures such as short circuits in home appliances.


Would I try this? Probably when I get my own house. Since it detecting anything that can possibly damage my house, makes this an investment to have in your house. At the end of the day it sounds like it can save you a lot of money in the long run because it can detect a hazard that you haven't seen.
