Texas Allergen Awareness Poster

SB 812, also known as the "Sergio Lopez Food Allergy Awareness Act," mandates that foodservice establishments prominently display a food allergen awareness poster in an area regularly accessed by employees. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) will provide a sample poster on its website by December 2023, with the expectation that Texas establishments will adhere to this requirement by September 1, 2024.

The prescribed poster must align with current scientific knowledge, be regularly updated, and encompass information on various aspects, including the risk of a reaction to a food allergen, symptoms of allergic reactions, major food allergens as determined by federal law and FDA regulations, procedures for preventing allergic reactions, and appropriate responses for aiding individuals experiencing an allergic reaction.

Furthermore, DSHS-accredited Certified Food Managers (CFM) and food handler training programs are mandated to incorporate food allergen awareness.
