What is an Active Shooter?
The FBI has defined an active shooter as “an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area.” In most cases, active shooters use one or more types of firearms and statistically do not have a pattern or method for their selection of victims. These situations can evolve quickly, with many incidents being over within 10 to 15 minutes before first responders even arrive on the scene. Though, some active shooter incidents continue until stopped intervention by law enforcement, by the victims, or suicide. The majority of attackers are familiar with their surroundings.
