What is Title VII of the Civil Rights Act?
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is a federal law that prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin1. It also provides for injunctive relief, compensatory and punitive damages, and other remedies for violations of the law2. Title VII applies to employers with 15 or more employees, as well as labor unions, employment agencies, and federal, state, and local governments3. Title VII also created the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which is responsible for enforcing the law and handling complaints of discrimination4.
